Sri Lanka is an island nation in South Asia, located on the Indian Ocean southwest of the Bay of Bengal and southeast of the Arabian Sea. Sri Lanka has been called “the pearl of the sea of India” because of its shape and location. It is geographically separated from the Indian subcontinent by the Gulf of Mannar and thealk Strait. Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is its legal capital, and Colombo is the largest city and commercial center.
Sri Lanka’s written history dates back 3,000 years, with evidence that prehistoric settlements began at least 125,000 years ago. It has a rich cultural heritage, and the earliest known Sri Lankan Buddhist texts, Pāli Canon, return to the fourth Buddhist council in 29 BCE Its location and deep harbors have made it extremely strategic from the time of the Ancient Road to the modern Maritime Silk Road. The former trade center made it known to both the Far East and the European continent from as far back as the Anuradhapura period. The country’s trade in luxury goods and spices attracted foreign merchants, opening up the diverse population of Sri Lanka. During the great political crisis, the Portuguese, who arrived in Sri Lanka at great risk, tried to control the maritime regions of the island and foreign trade with great profit. Portuguese property was also confiscated by the Dutch. Dutch goods were then confiscated by the British, who later extended their power throughout the island, colonizing it from 1815 to 1948. Opposition to the British was swift. The national movement for political independence emerged in the early 20th century, and in 1948, Ceylon became a republic and adopted its current name in 1972. Sri Lanka’s recent history is marred by a 26-year civil war, which ended when the Sri Lankan Armed Forces defeated the Tamil Eelam Liberation Tigers in 2009.
The current constitution of Sri Lanka sets it as an independent and co-operative state governed by the system of the former president. There is a long history of international involvement, as a founding member of the South Asia Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), and as a member of the United Nations, Commonwealth of Nations, G77, and the Non-Aligned Movement. Sri Lanka is rated “high” in the Human Development Index (HDI), with its HDI rating and the highest per capita income among South Asian nations. The Sri Lankan constitution gives Buddhism a “priority”, and although it does not identify it as a state religion, Buddhism is granted special privileges in the Sri Lankan constitution.
Sri Lanka is home to many cultures, languages , and races.
