Guatemala, a Central American country. The sovereignty of Indian culture among the great peaks within it separates Guatemala from its Central American neighbors. The origin of the name Guatemala is of Indian origin, but its origin and meaning are not limited. Some say the first form was Quauhtemallan (indicating Aztec and not Mayan origin), meaning “land of trees,” and others say it is based on Guhatezmalha, meaning “mountain of water for purification” – no doubt on such a volcano. the blast was the one that destroyed the Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala (modern-day Antigua Guatemala), the first Spanish capital of the region. The capital of the modern state, Guatemala City, is a major city center; Quetzaltenango in the western highlands is the backbone of the Indian people.

After securing independence from Spain in the 1820s, Guatemala had a long history of government through authoritarian rule and military ceremonies until it came to power in 1985. Beginning in 1954, Guatemalan governments have faced stiff opposition to create a civil war that lasted for 36 years until the 1996 peace treaty was signed. The struggles of the Guatemalan Indians during the war were illuminated when Rigoberta Menchú, Quiché Maya and a representative of indigenous people throughout Latin America, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992.

Guatemala is the largest economy in Central America, with a GDP (PPP) of US $ 5,200. However, Guatemala faces many social problems and is one of the poorest countries in Latin America. The distribution of income is not very different from over half of the national poverty line and over 400,000 (3.2%) are unemployed. The CIA World Fact Book accounts for 54.0% of Guatemala’s people living in poverty in 2009.

In 2010, the Guatemalan economy grew 3%, recovering slightly from the 2009 crisis, due to falling demand from the US and other Central American markets and a decline in foreign investment in the middle of the global recession.

In March 2006, a conference in Guatemala ratified the Dominican Republic – the Free Trade Agreement of Central America (DR-CAFTA) between several Native American and Native American nations. Guatemala also has free trade agreements with Taiwan and Colombia.
