Major industries include tourism, carpet, textiles, tobacco, cement, brick, and small quantities of rice, jute, sugar, and oil mills. International trade in Nepal was greatly expanded in 1951 with the introduction of democracy; independence began in 1985 and began at a rapid pace after 1990.
