Norway, a northern European country living in the western part of the Scandinavian peninsula. About half of the country’s population lives in the far south, in the region around Oslo, the capital. About two-thirds of Norway is mountainous, and along its picturesque coastline, they are carved out of deep snow fjords, some 50,000 islands.
Norway’s natural beauty attracts tourists from all over the world. The world has produced many important artists, including composer Edvard Grieg, painter Edvard Munch, scientists Knut Hamsun and Sigrid Undset, and playwright Henrik Ibsen. Of his country and the people in it, Ibsen noted, “The beautiful scenic, yet spectacular, surroundings of the people up there, the lonely, lonely life – far-flung farms – forces them to be … thoughtful and serious. At home, everyone is a philosopher. ! ”
The Norwegian economy is an example of a mixed economy; The flourishing social capital places a combination of free-market activities and large ownership of certain key sectors, influenced by both liberal governments from the late 19th century and later by post-war democracy. Norwegian public health care is free (after a yearly fee of 2000 kroner for those over 16), and parents have 46 weeks of paid parental leave. State revenue derived from natural resources constitutes a significant contribution from petroleum production. Norway has an unemployment rate of 4.8%, and 68% of 15-74-year-olds are employed.
The state holds major patents in key industrial sectors, such as strategic petroleum industry (Statoil), power generation (Strkraft), aluminum production (Norsk Hydro), Norwegian central bank (DNB), and telecommunications provider (Telenor). Through these large companies, the government controls about 30% of the stock price on the Oslo Stock Exchange. When unlisted companies are incorporated, the state has far more ownership allocations (especially from direct oil license ownership). Norway is the largest shipping country and has the world’s largest merchant ships, with 1,412 boats for Norwegian traders.
