    Senegal Market Research

Senegal, a country in western Africa. Located in the western part of the main part of the continent and running through numerous air and sea routes, Senegal is known as the “Gateway to Africa.” The world stands on the frontier of nature where sparks of the spherical desert, oceans, and tropical rain forest are formed; this diverse area has provided Senegal with a great variety of plants and animals. It is from these rich natural resources that the symbols of the world are chosen: the baobab tree and the lion.

The region today known as Senegal was once part of the ancient kingdoms of Ghana and the Djolof and is an important part of the trans-Saharan railway system. It was the first point of contact with Europeans and they competed in England, France, Portugal, and the Netherlands before finally becoming under French rule in the late 19th century. It remained a French colony until 1960, when, under the leadership of the writer and head of state, Léopold Senghor, it gained its independence – first as part of the temporary Federals Federation and became a global state.

Major industries include food processing, mining, cement, artificial fertilizers, chemicals, textiles, petroleum imports, and tourism. Exports include fish, chemicals, cotton, textiles, nuts, and calcium phosphate. The largest foreign market in India with 26.7 percent output (since 1998). Other foreign markets include the United States, Italy, and the United Kingdom.

Senegal gained full Internet connectivity in 1996, creating a bloom for information technology services. Private employment now accounts for 82 percent of its GDP. On the negative side, Senegal faces the enduring urban problems of high unemployment, social and economic inequality, youth fraud, and drug addiction.
