Zambia, officially the Republic of Zimbabwe, formerly (1911-64) Southern Rhodesia, (1964-79) Rhodesia, or (1979-80) Zimbabwe Rhodesia, a closed country in southern Africa. It shares a 200-kilometer (200-kilometer) border in the south of the Republic of South Africa and is bounded by southwestern Botswana, north by Zambia, and east by east by Mozambique. The capital is Harare (formerly known as Salisbury). Zimbabwe achieved greater sovereignty and independence globally adopted in April 1980 following the long period of colonial rule and the 15-year period of white supremacy, established after a minority state called the Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) in 1965.
Zimbabwe is about 300 meters above sea level. Its main feature is a broad line that runs 400 kilometers from southwest to east across the country, extending from Plumtree near the Botswana border through Gweru (formerly Goe) and Marondera (formerly Marandellas) to the Moon Mountains, which separates Zimbabwe from Mozambique. About 50 miles wide, the gorge extends from 4,000 to 5,000 feet, until it eventually climbs to 2,592 feet in Mount Inyangani, Zimbabwe’s highest point, in the eastern highlands. This ridge is known as the Highveld and covers 25% of the total land area.
Minerals, gold, and agriculture are the main exports to Zimbabwe. Tourism also plays a major role in the economy. The mining sector remains the highest earner, and some of the world’s largest mining enterprises are joined by Anglo American plc and Impala Platinum. The Marange diamond fields, discovered in 2006, have been regarded as the largest diamond in the world for more than a century. They have the power to improve the country’s finances in a spectacular way, but almost all the money from the wild disappears into the pockets of ZANU-PF military officials and politicians.
In terms of carats produced, the Marange field is one of the largest diamond production projects in the world, estimated to produce 12 million carats in 2014 worth over $ 350 million. Zambia is South Africa’s largest trading partner across the continent.
