The banking system in Azerbaijan consists of the Central Bank of Azerbaijan, commercial banks, and non-bank credit organizations. The World Bank (now Central) was established in 1992 based on the bank of the Azerbaijan State Savings Bank, which is a joint venture with the previous State Savings Bank of the USSR. The Central Bank operates as a central bank of Azerbaijan, empowered to issue a national currency, Azerbaijani manat, and oversee all commercial banks. The two largest trading banks are UniBank and Azerbaijan-led International Bank led by Dr. Jahangir Hajiyev.
