The land is noted for its beautiful abundance; its rugged mountains and spectacular Black Sea resorts attract many tourists. Like other peoples of the Balkan Peninsula, Bulgaria claims to mix Eastern and Western cultures, and the mix is evident in its food, its construction, and its religious blood. Though located in western Bulgaria, the capital, Sofia, is conveniently located near the center of the Balkan region, and in almost all other respects occupies the central part of Bulgaria. With a population of over one million, Sofia has about three times the population of the next largest cities, Plovdiv and Varna.
Bulgaria has an open, high middle-market economy where the private sector costs more than 70% of GDP. From a highly agricultural country with a large rural population in 1948, in the 1980s Bulgaria was transformed into an industrial economy by scientific and technological research at the beginning of its capital expenditures. A shocking “plan” caused a major industrial and agricultural downturn, followed by a recession in 1997. The economy recovered dramatically during a period of rapid growth several years later, but the average wage was 1,036 leva ($ 615 ) per month remains the lowest in the EU. More than a fifth of the workers work on the minimum wage of $ 1.16 an hour.
